I had this exact issue. Downloaded the combo update for 10.6.8 and the App Store update but nothing worked. Finally determined that the issue was with my network as I had upgraded my wireless network from DSL to fiber optic. Click on the top menu bar on the wireless icon and go to your Open Network Preferences, go to the Advanced tab, and then select the TCP/IP tab.
