If you spend a lot of time perusing Craigslist, as some of the staff here in the Orbiting HQ have been known to do, you might want to check out a new application from Black Pixel Luminance called Agent Craig. Agent Craig allows you to search for listings on Craigslist and keep track of them in a fashion similar to a news reader. You are able to search a variety of the Craigslist areas—22 to be exact—by keyword and category. While all of the categories (sans the forums) are available, unfortunately, many of the locations are missing.

While the UI is familiar to us with its three pane view, the third pane is a bit unwieldily and doesn't collapse after performing a search. The UI, in my opinion, leaves something to be desired, and some actions that you would expect to work a certain way don't (deleting a search by using command + d is ineffective). Perhaps the strangest part of the Agent Craig is the included menubar item which, upon click, hides the entire app. Perhaps the developer was unaware of the command + h functionality of OS X?

Still, the core functionality of the application works as advertised. One thing I liked was that you could make notes on each listing simply by double clicking on the ad and inputing information into the the 'notes' pane.

While it is somewhat obvious that the intended use of Agent Craig is searching Craigslist, in theory, it allows users to also search eBay. When the eBay option is selected, however, you still are greeted with the Craigslist areas and categories in the right-most pane. Unfortunately, I couldn't get the eBay search to work, even if I did I doubt that it would be enough for any hardcore eBayers.
The saving grace of this application is resting on its plug-in architecture and what third-parties decide to do with it. There is a patent search plug-in forthcoming, which will be particularly useful for us, and another portion of the plug-in how-to is in the works.

The app is certainly handy, and makes searching Craigslist a bit more manageable. Depending on your level of obsession, you may be able to look over the UI flaws and swallow the $29 license fee. Otherwise, you may want to wait for a minor UI tweak. The developers have told us that the fixes are coming, and that users can take advantage of a two-week trial to try it out and ask the responsive developers for features and bug fixes.
